Allen Gilbert
Salem Online Student

What made you decide to take classes through distance education?

I have four children, two are babies, and my wife and I both work. Distance learning is a necessity for me to finish my degree. It would be extremely difficult to fit higher education into our busy lives without it!

What ‘s the best part of taking an online class?

The flexibility! I could check into a class at 2 a.m., if that was the only time I had to study.

Were there any challenges?

The only challenge was when my own computer went down. Fortunately I had access to another computer at the local library while mine was being fixed. I even signed on from a family member’s computer to take one exam. The instructor even gave me a grace period to catch up.

How was the instructor feedback? Were they easily accessible?

The feedback was consistent with an on-campus class. Most of the time the other students would answer questions before the instructor or another student would post the same question I had and it became a discussion. The instructors were there to help or to post comments if we couldn’t find a solution ourselves.

Didn’t you miss the interaction with other students in your online classes?

Not at all. The WebBoard and message areas were similar to online "chat" rooms and it seemed that there was always someone online. In that respect, other students were actually more accessible than in an on-campus class.
